Loved that band and was friends with Judy and Dan. Great song ”On the Water”…Girl Power!! Go! There were so many bands with young women around 1980. I helped Bound and Gagged make a recording, I think the song was called ”Chains and Polymers.” They were really far out. All girls. Judy was a powerhouse in Maps and Salem 66 another great all gal band albeit a little later on. Dangerous Birds…jeez it’s all a bit of a blur. I liked the Bristols a lot, a real lot. But again that’s later 82-83.
There were other bands that come to mind who also had women lead singers and song writers in the late seventies, like Lori Doll from Tracks , Barb Kitson with Thrills, Casey Cameron in Human Sexual Response, Lizzie Bordon and the Axes and Robin Lane fronting and writing for The Chartbusters. We played with Tracks and Thrills quite a few times. Lori Doll and Barb were so rock and roll and so tough. There seemed to me to be a lot of support for the women in bands in Boston at the time and that energy and talent added a lot to the scene.
The Maps were great contemporaries and always put on a wonderful show. I remember the stage with that lightning bolt so well.

I was friends with Dan through Berklee. I met him on my way to school each day in the record shop he worked in on Boylston. He was just forming The Maps then. It was so exciting for him! He felt they would get the record deal they wanted. We dated through 1978 and 1979. I recorded with Producer Phil Tatro and Dan helped me to shape my songs. Phil played an experimental soprano Sax Electric Guitars, drums, Bass. I sang and wrote the songs and lyrics. I lived on Beacon Hill and he was in a loft practice space in South Boston or Roxbury. I was writing and singing and producing my own avant garde post-punk (we didn’t dare call our music New Wave). My Album -Crystal Eyes. We would go on the Orange Line to his loft and practice. His gigs at The Rathskellar with THE MAPS were amazing. We were creating music in an amazing time…1978-1982. I also knew Judy then. From the band and also C’est Si Bon. She was a waitress and I was a pastry chef! She loved the artistry of my cakes – she said they looked like cartoons. I miss Dan…I think I really loved him…He was a great mentor and the coolest dude…he had such great style, ideas, and language. So happy to see others appreciating them and the times even still today. The Neighborhoods, The Humans, The Cars, Mission of Burma, Blondie, Elvis, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Siousxie, Devo, I’ll think of some more Boston bands.
Hi Edie. Nice to see your recollections. It was a great time to be in Boston. Some great music. Thanks for the shout out. Cheers, Phil
Hi there,
I’m writing you to know if someone have the e-mail address of Judy Grunwald or someone other band member because I’d like to write asking about their great record.
Thank and stay safe 🙂
